The Transylvanian Museum

The Transylvanian Museum owns more than 22,000 exhibits, the most important collection of Transylvanian Saxonian art and historical artefacts outside Romania. The origins of the museum go back to Transylvanian-Saxon associations that started to assemble a collection  of items pertaining to folklore and cultural history in the 1960s.  It was first made accessible to the public in 1968. In 1991 the museum was granted the status of a regional museum for Transylvania.Since then its collections have been systematically supplemented and expanded under professional management. The permanent exhibition on the ground floor was comprehensively redesigned in 1996/1997 and contains a selection of the extensive collection. Seven thematic areas present and exemplify the eventful history and multifaceted culture of the Transylvanian Saxons from the Middle Ages to the present day in the context of their multi-ethnic and multi-religious environment. On the upper floor of the museum special exhibitions are held several times a year. There is also a cabinet of graphica and a collection of Transylvanian textiles, ceramics, gold and silver objects. An additional storage building outside the museum ensures the proper storage of the museum`s extensive collection.
